You will recognize the patterns as childhood adaptations that have both gifts and very real challenges—each forged at a certain stage in the first 5 years of life.

The best way to take in this information is at your own pace, with intention and curiosity. Each pattern is broken into 3 videos to make it manageable and to allow time for reflection. We recommend watching one pattern at a time, giving yourself space to process the material before moving on.

As you engage with the content, try journaling, reflecting on your own experiences, or discussing insights with someone you trust. Every person generally runs 1- to 3 of these patterns, with one as primary. Practice noticing the patterns in your life and relationships. Remember, this is a journey of exploration, not a race. Allow the material to settle deeply, and trust that integration happens in layers over time.

As you learn about these six strategies in this course, you will begin to recognize the shape of your own reflexes—how you reach, withdraw, perform, endure, control, or freeze. This awareness is the turning point. You notice it in others too. When you understand your partner’s pattern in relationship, it softens blame and activates compassion. In your work, it brings clarity to power dynamics, communication, and unconscious motivations. In your own inner world, it invites tenderness where there was once confusion or self-judgment.

For an extended dive, we encourage you to dive further by purchasing Stephen Kessler’s 5 Personality Patterns, which is based on the same perennial work of Wilhem Reich. You will recognize the patterns. Kessler only lists 5 because, like Reich, he tucks the ‘Self-Reliant Merging Pattern’ (which accounts for an estimated %25 of the population) into the chapter on the Merging Pattern.

Most people carry threads of multiple patterns. That’s expected. You will eventually recognize one as dominant. You can think of your primary pattern as the ‘toast’ and then you have the jam and butter - secondary and tertiary. In your process of self-discovery, you may be unsure what your ‘toast’ is.
