Steven Kessler’s the 5 Personality Patterns gives us a map of personality that allows us to easily understand ourselfs and others. It shows us what people caught in each of the five survival patterns want and fear, and how to interact with them successfully. It shows us how to soften our conditioned habits of attention, return to presence, and develop emotional maturity.

5PP lays out that map and shows us the path back to your true self. Once you know where you’re going, the inner journey becomes much easier. Without a map, you may have been walking in circles for years. With a map, you can find your way home.

5PP helps us connect deeply into the soul of our soma and truths and illuminates through direct experience, in ourselves, how our bodies have adaptations to the positive and negative forces in our environments in such a way that it both protects us and also allows us to adapt, defend against parental anger or rejection, and maximize whatever crumbs of love or attention available to us. We can identify our strategies as they show up in the body as patterns of structure, posture, movement, gesture, emotions, energetics, sensations, tensions, memories patterned thoughts, images, visions..etc. We develop character strategies around childhood wounds experienced at critical periods of development.

These core survival strategies are reflections of underlying, mostly unconscious, limiting core beliefs that help us to explain or conform to parental expectations and/or unmet needs.

Through experiential body based presenting and discoveries as well as therapy, and safe relationship. We can become highly attuned to looking at and experiencing our bodies as an expression of soul and spirit, conscious and unconscious manifested.

Anyone who has raised children, or been a child ;), will immediately recognize these developmental stages. We see these core developmental and survival strategies as a response to the environment’s success or failure in helping the child master each developmental task, keeping in mind that we all have all the strategies, as there are superpowers and protections in each one.

We all are born into the world with a unique a birth experience, and experience ourselves through our mothers and caretakers and families and environments, with different ancestral threads and multidimensionaliti’s. We all move through all stages of developement in our own unique way. There no ‘one’ strategy that handles all the challenges a child faces.

Most of us have a mixture of strategies.

Over the next few weeks we will be looking at these individual character strategies in more detail, and will see how they provide another way for us to understand ‘the wisdom of the body’ in ourselves and all our relations.
